Do you have any other resident shields running? They might be stopping avg from running. I'm guessing you've run all the updates and rebooted the machine since, so I'm assuming it's not that reason.

I have exactly the same problem. I also upgraded my Dell laptop to Vista and there's no way to activate resident shield in the latest version of AVG free edition. Anybody can help?

Same problem here. Got an Acer laptop, upgraded to Vista and since then resident shield stopped working.
Now I had Norton installed before and when the free ride expired I removed it and installed AVG. I found out that there were some traces of Norton that were stopping resident shield from running. So removed every trace, even messed around with registry settings to completely kill Norton. Well it worked re-installed AVG and RS started BUT only lasted till next reboot. Can't get running again.

I have the exact opposite problem. I am running Vista Business edition. Anyway, I can't turn off resident shield protection. Whenever I uncheck the box to diasable it, the program automatically puts it back as soon as I open it again.
