Hi all...

I recently noticed on Antivir's website that they are discontinuing support for Windows 98 and ME at the end of June. Does anyone have any more details on this and why?

Despite the pesky "avnotify" nagscreen, AVPE was my AV of choice when it came to older systems without a lot of resources. It will be sad to see this option go. Sad

Windows 98 and ME are both obselete. That's why.

Get the AVG Free version. It works well on all Windows platforms and has a very small footprint. It has no nags too.

Hi Prince_Serendip...

I've been using AVG Free since finding this out from Avira. The only bad thing is detections aren't as good and its weight is significant (more so than Antivir) on older systems.

I wonder how long it will before Grisoft and Alwil follow suit? Windows 98 and ME are still pretty prevalent out there Wink

Win98/ME Program Updates are ending for AntiVir at end of June 2007, however VDF (Signature) Updates are continuing through end of December.

AVIRA has said that they are considering extending the VDF Support beyond December, the more Win98/ME Users there are, the better the chance of extending support.

Hi pilotart...

Looks like you do. Either that or the poll is closed. Wink

Would my voice count with Avira? I work on a lot of systems with Windows 98, so while it may be obsolete technically, a lot of people still use it for various reasons.

Best Regards...

I noticed that too. Wink

And it still doesn't look like Avira's stance is going to change on this which is really too bad since it is an excellent AV as well as a good choice for low spec systems. Sad

Best Regards...

"ArdvarkIsHereAgain,"

Yes, "Ardy" it does look that way. As long as the ability to download VDF updates that still work on my system . . I will still be there and running their software. It is too good to give up, maybe even after the UPDATES have stopped, I will be there and here.

Best regards and GoodLuck to you,

There has been a MAJOR UpDate to their board since I had made this post. Now you do not need to worry about the reading of German. Those that post in German are not translated, not a problem for me, because they have the English area where we can post. The RButtons are in English now.

If you use Win98/SE/ME then go there an cast your vote, it will only be registered once. I have been a member for over a year and there are many helpful questions asked, if you just want to LURK, or ask some that may help other members.

If you have any suggestions to maybe improve or add features are welcomed by them.
