Recently Yahoo made changes to the way it's chat rooms worked.
In the past anyone who logged into a room that was full would simply be bounced out of the room with a message to try again. They changed the rooms to no longer dump people outside. They now place a person in whatever room has space.
There was always going to be problems with this. Most of the people on chat go to room with regular friends and don't just visit any old room. There have been reports that Yahoo was attempting to punish regulars who had become a little rude by making it more difficult to be a regular... Who knows.
The effect they did not count on was one where the bots had been used to stuff rooms so people would be denied, then spilled right across the entire section rather than being limited to the room they were attacking.
Instead of having ten rooms in religion with varying amounts of people they might have had twenty rooms full of bot and people were only able to get into rooms at the back and unable to predict which room it would. I understand the servers were overwhelmed at some stage.
During that period Yahoo Chat was under attack and I just posted this thought on another forum.
| Quote: | | The current bot attacks disrupting Yahoo Chat are a form of cyber-terrorism. They are a calculated attack to disrupt a communications link. I am a little surprised there have been no news stories or government interest so far. Is everyone in denial or is a digital war against a certain population too subtle for people who crave a dirty bomb to complain about. |

Well dood, after many millions of emails to yaho inc., yahoo finally has won the war against the bots with Captcha Project login screen. The porn bots are gone and I mean G-O-N-E. You cannot enter yahoo chat w/o human intervention, nor can you change rooms. So there's a little bother to get in to chat, but well worth it. Let's hope yahoo can keep it this way.

Amen and well done yahoo, I have been in there lately and the lack of bots is great. Also went inro a forum where a few bot makers and bot users were howling about it. Must have taken a lot of work to spew out all those bots..poor things _________________ Everywhere is being measured and possessed by unmagical minds, it's sacred places overrun, and their guardians driven to drink and despair (Clive Barker, Everville)
