If you open the Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools -- Advanced Tools ... any problems reported there?

Try adjusting "appearance and performance" for best performance -- or use the custom dialog to uncheck just about everything except "smooth edges of screen fonts" and "use visual styles ..."

By the way, you didn't say how much ram is installed or whether you have tested it ...

On Vista -- although it might not be the best of checkers you can run:

mdsched.exe

Read the extra info on it and run the extended tests.

i have 4 Gb ram, i have 2 hards drives each 250 G , i installed vistas x64 on the hard drive that i already had vistas x32 on, no only did the installation give me problems with vistas x64 when i rebooted vistas x32 that was crashing all the time, so i deleted vistas x64 and x32 doesnt have any problems now. i thought i would try installing x64 on the other hard drive, but i have window xp x32 on that one, is it because i have another operating system on the drive thats causing the problems. i didn't think this would.

I don't know what the implications of having both a 64 and 32 bit version on the same system would be. But I imagine it would be at the BIOS level if any.

You also need to have a pretty hefty power supply to handle that system.

i have a 950 watt power supply , but as you never run the two systems together that shouldn't be a major problem should it? i will try installing x64 on my other hard drive and checking the things you suggested in the first post to see if that helps stop the screen freezing and hopefully it will not effect the windows xp thats on the same drive.

Well I'm not sure what the demands of the 64 bit version of Vista are -- but certainly the PS is more than adequate for anything.

I haven't seen too many folks running 64 bit OS versions -- and the ones that I have, naturally, have all had problems of one kind or another. It's usually an issue of compatible drivers being buggy or not available.

There's a forum here that might be of value to you:

There is an update here that looks like it might apply:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/938194

including one for x64 versions of Windows

Good luck with it. Well as a matter of fact I looked before but couldn't find it -- however, today at another site I saw someone had posted it for a different issue.

So I checked it out -- even installed it myself -- and hope it helps you.

As for the BIOS -- you weren't overclocked were you?

actually i was overclocked so maybe that was the problem, will i have problem over clocking in the future with x64, or was i just with the installation.

Yeah, I was going to ask about that -- actually you are probably in "uncharted" territory here so by all means experiment and see what happens. Your experience may be useful for others.

It's possible the update may mediate some of those issues, but who knows?

I'm not really a hardware person so you might want to check out some of the sites that really specialize in that.

No problem, you're certainly welcome for whatever I could add.
