Hi,
I am trying to help my brother-in-law with a problem. He has a Gateway laptop running XP Media, a Linksys 2.4 Ghz router, and DSL modem. The Linksys software will establish the connection to the wireless adapter by connecting by wire to the router. After the connection is established you can disconnect the wired connection and run wirelessly. As soon as you reboot you have to go back through the wired process again.
Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
So you say only the first time you want to establish the connection you'll have to do it by using a wire and not the next times?
Is there anything of the products you listed that you just bought or did the problem recently start after it was working fine? If so, did you install any new hardware or software right before the problems started?
Do you have any other laptops, or one which you can borrow from someone like that neighbor to test whether the problem occurs there too? If so, please do that and tell me the results.

Hi John,
He recently started using DSL and this is the first time using all the equipment. Its a new set up. The connection can be established following the steps for the software included with the Lynksys router. It prompts you to connect your computer by wire to the router which gets the connection established with the wireless connection. After that you can disconnect from the wired connection and work with the wireless connection. The problem comes after you shut down the computer. In order to connect wirelessly again you have to go back through the process of hooking up wired and allowing the connection to be estblished. If you don't do this you get the limited or no connectivity message from windows. Windows also gives a message that it cannot connect the wireless device and that you must use the software that comes with your device (Belkin if I remember correctly) to establish a wireless connection. As I understand what is happening the computer looks for the wired connection and when that is not connected it gives the no connectivity message. I do not think it ever tries to establish the wireless connection until you go through the whole process again. I will ask him to look at this thread and see if he can help with your other suggestions.
Thank you for your help.
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Lets see whether this helps:
- Go to Start
- Now click on Control Panel
- Make sure you're working with the Classic View by clicking on Switch to Classic View on the left. If it says switch to Category View you're already working with the classic one.
- Click on Wireless Network Setup Wizard and follow the wizard.
- Now close all the windows which you have opened.
- Double-click on the system tray with the monitor.
- Optional: Click on View Wireless Networks.
- Make sure your router is switched on and the wireless stuff is working.
- Search for networks and try to connect to your network.
- If this doesn't work reboot and try to connect again using View Wireless Networks.
Please let me know if it's still not working and whether the network can be tested with other laptops.

Hi John,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I'm trying to find time to get by my BIL'S house to work on this. I forwarded this post to him but I guess he hasn't had time to get to it. I hope you can hang in there a little for me until I have a chance to try to fix this. I haven't forgotten, just haven't had the time to work on it.
Thanks,
Jeff
