|
|
Hello,
I just recently moved and do not have internet hooked up yet; however, my neighbor said i could use my wireless and connect off of hers.
I know my wireless card works because I used it to connect to my old roommates dsl. But now, i can connect to my neighbors network and it even says im connected, however when i open up internet explorer it says page can not be displayed. Is it just a setting i need to change?

It could be a problem on the other end, or may be the wireless is not connected after all.
Please post more info about your setup ...
You could start troubleshooting by, let's say: from a Dos/command prompt:
c:\>ipconfig/all

The link local address above indicates that the wireless connection is established, but the dhcp server was not discovered.
In other words, the connection is "partially" up.
Could you double check that you are connecting to the correct wireless network? check that you are using the correct network name and password.

What kind of router does your neighbor have?
I think it is very likely a problem on that end; specifically dhcp settings on the router.
Can you ask the neighbor to logon to the router and check the dhcp addresses range?
Also find out if the router is setup for WEP or WPA, and whether mac filtering is setup.

Hi,
As Nubiatech is talking about DHCP is found this line in the ipconfig log:
| Quote: | | Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No |
I tried some things with google and then this page came up:
http://www.more.net/technical/win/dhcp.html#xp
Please do those steps for Windows XP while being disconnected from the router of your neighbor.
After doing the steps please reboot and try to connect to the router.
Please let me know if the settings were already like that and if not if it helped.

Can you please take the laptop to your neighbors house and there, while being very near to the router, try to connect.
It could very well be that the signal is too weak. _________________ Trained by MalWare Removal

I'm not sure about that, but I guess that you would be able to work then because the connection is already totally completed. _________________ Trained by MalWare Removal

that didn't work either
but we tried some other stuff
we entered ip address manually and their dns number from the router
and it connects and packets are flying both ways
but then it disconnects
is there a setting blocking me now? they dont know anything about MAC filtering and either do i so i dont know if its that or something else
