Any clue as to what your problems are? Please describe what they are, in your own words. That would go a long way to helping your responder find a solution. Thanks.

Your version of HijackThis is out-of-date.

We prefer that you use the latest version to scan your computer for problems.

Please click Here to download the latest version of HijackThis to your desktop.

Click the Download button. When the Trend Micro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.

It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.

The program will open automatically after installation.

You can double-click the icon that was placed on the Desktop to run subsequent HijackThis scans or you can use the icon inside the folder. The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save. When you use the application to remove anything, you will also find the backup copies made by HJT inside this folder.

Close all other windows except HijackThis.

Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile" When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here. (Ctrl+A to highlight everything in the log, Ctrl+C to copy it to your clipboard. In your PostReply, position the cursor and press Ctrl+V to paste it.)

Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Please post the new log below. Thanks.

It was like this. I installed an .exe file that was supposedly a codec so that I can watch videos online. It successfully installed and I can't find where the directory it was installed to. It just installed and was done. Now, I get random pop-up messages that say that I'm potentially having a trojan ___ (name which i cannot remember offhand) and I should do something about it i.e. click yes and got to whatever they are suggesting. This is not a message from my anti-virus. I have concluded that it is a hijacker of somesort. I've ran ad-aware and AVG anti-virus and found nothing. However I think there's still some malware lurking in my system. Thanks.

I just got the thing again. It's a window that reads:

Critical System Warning

Your system is probably infected with the latest version of Trojan.Zlob-X.a
Full system optimization will greatly increase your computer's performance and prevent data loss.

Click OK to download antispyware software! (Recommended)

This is DEFINITELY something fishy imho.

Thanks.

Yes it's phishy, and it smells dead. Thanks for posting the latest version of HijackThis.

Having experienced this, I suppose from now on, whenever you download anything, you'll scan it for viruses and trojans before opening it. Most antivirus and anti-malware scanners allow you to scan single files. Right-click the file and use that scanner on it!

Also, next time you buy a computer, tell the sales or tech that you want ALL codecs installed before you pick it up. Cheaper that way. A lot of manufacturer installs exclude the codecs, forcing users to buy them online. I did that, and haven't regretted it.

You need to read a few things here.

1> CastleCops Link/t102301-Hijackthis_Guidelines_Read_Before_Posting.html

2> CastleCops Link/t49434-The_Rules.html (See #2)

3> CastleCops Link/f92-Help_ME.html Read only forum for people who want help.

Thanks

I've read those guidelines before in the past. I'm sorry I pmed u... I didn't know it's unacceptable now because I pmed a staff before in the past.

What do you mean by it's dead? It still pops up in my IE all the time. Is there any way I can delete it? I have actually scanned the file before going through the installer, but I do not think that there is a directory for it.

Please advise.

I meant that you're infected. It was a humorous way of expressing it. You'll have to wait now for a 1st Responder to answer your need. Take care.

Thank you for your patience. You are now qualified to post in the Unhandled Logs topic. See instructions below:

Here are step-by-step instructions to get your topic address added to a list where you can get help:

To get the proper address of your topic, click on its title. When it's finished refreshing, click the http address in your browser address bar (at the top) to highlight it. Press Ctrl+C to copy it. It's now on your clipboard.

Go to the Unhandled Logs (<<click on this link) topic. Make a post there with the address you just copied in it. Scroll to the bottom and click on image. In the post reply form, press Ctrl+V to copy the address to your post and click image.

That will put your topic in a list that our 1st Responders check regualrly, so you can get some help with your problems.
Please do NOT: post your HijackThis log in the Unhandled Logs topic, and do NOT post the address to your topic as a New topic. Thanks.

Please run another HijackThis scan and post a fresh log into this thread (under my post right here). A lot can happen in a few days so a new log is important, and we require it. Thanks.

.....and someone will help you ASAP! Thumbs Up

Hello again. Thanks for your reply. I ran an online scan the other day and I located a harmful .dll file. I think that was the culprit and I deleted it. I do not get the warning anymore in my IE. Nevertheless, I just want to counter-check that everything's fine and clean.

Thanks. This is my log :

Hello. I am grsamf, or Gerald if that’s easier, and I will be working with you to solve the problems you are having. As we go along, there are several things to keep in mind:

  • Reviewing a log can be time-consuming, so please be patient.
  • It is important that you understand each instruction that I give you and follow it exactly. If there is something I have not explained clearly, do not guess at what the instruction means. Ask me to clarify.
  • Some instructions may involve several steps and often will require closing your browser and/or rebooting. Please read through each of my posts carefully before beginning and then follow the instructions in order.
  • If you are unable to complete any step, do not continue to the next step. Post any problems with completing the steps here before proceeding.
  • Printing the instructions before beginning might be helpful.
I do not see any signs of malware in your HJT log, so the online scan you ran may have done the trick. Let’s do a couple of things to dig a little deeper so we can be sure, though.

First, can you tell me what online scan you ran and did it produce a log for you? If it did and you still have the log, please copy and paste it in your next post.

Second, please download Combofix from http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe and save it to the desktop.
  • Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
  • Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang. Do not proceed with the rest of the fix if you fail to run combofix.

Third, please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runners.
  • If you use Internet Exploer, choose, Save Target As
  • If you use FireFox, choose Save Link As
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runners by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" on the icon on your desktop.
    • If you get a message that the VBScript was not found, click Start, then Run.
    • In the box type "regsvr32 VBScript" without the quotes and hit OK.
    • A popup will tell you that “DllRegisterServer in VBScript succeeded.”
    • Now double click the icon again and proceed with the instructions.
  • You will receive a prompt:
Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      Click NO
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop -. Another message box will appear saying: "Silent Runners has started It's not done, let it run (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done! The results are in a file that the tool has created You will find it in the same directory as the script or on your desktop. The log is named "Startup Programs (ComputerName) date/timestamp.txt".
  • Open the text file that the tool has created .
  • Copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
** Note: If you have a script blocking program you may get a warning asking if you want to allow the script to run. Some will say "malicious script warning" or something to that effect. There is nothing malicious about this script, you can click to allow it to execute.

Fourth, produce a new HJT log.

Your next post should have:
  • Log from your online scan if available
  • ComboFix log
  • Silent Runners log
  • HJT log
