Hello friends,

I recently installed an ADSL2+ router (and started net surfing), but i have noticed that my computer is being infected by lots of viruses after this. I have McAfee antivirus installed and it keeps giving messages of having cleaned up infected files.

I used to access the internet using a dial-up modem previously and had no such problems with viruses. Why is this happening with my new connection ?

Also I want to know how i prevent these viruses from entering and infecting my computer (while i access the internet).

Thanks in advance.

In addition to your router, you also need a good, properly configured, two-way software firewall. If you need one, you can obtain one from CastleCops Downloads.

Viruses can infect your computer in a number of ways, including web browsing, IM, in the body of and in attachments to E-mail messages, file downloads, etc etc etc. Check the virus database for your anti-virus program for information on how the specific viruses detected on your computer are typically propagated.

Because viruses are not the only threat out there, you may also be infected by other malware such as trojans, spyware or keyloggers. I recommend that you work through the Malware Removal and Prevention

procedure. This procedure has been designed to enable you to partially or even fully rid your

computer of viruses, trojans, adware, and spyware. Be sure to carefully follow the directions in order to

achieve the best results. If you have any questions about any of the steps, then please post a new topic

in the appropriate forum. There are links to them along the way. If you still need help when you finish,

please read
these directions

Well, my dad had the same experience. Before, when we used to have only a dial up connection, no malware etc was evident in my dad's pc. Everything was running as smooth as how they should be but when we switched to broadband, Boom! In just a few minutes, his machine was almost dying from constant malware attack and infection. Honestly, I was a bit shocked at what happened too. Being the 'antimalware kid' in our home, he asked me how did all this happen. The most 'logical' explanation that he could arrive to is that the broadband brought those malware someway but since the connection is not shared by other homes etc, I didn't think it was a feasible idea. So, I did my best and cleaned the machine and returned it to its original state. While I was digging, I saw several bots, downloaders etc. From that time on, I thought that a more feasible idea was that those downloaders managed to download the 'big stuff' faster because the internet is definitely a lot faster and therefore, the infection was almost faster.

With all that said, I think it's best if you follow msrugg's advice.
