I will show you some tips that will make your home (or small office) wireless network more secure than when you get it ''out of the box.''

Step 1 - Change your router default password.

Step 2 - Change your router IP address.

Step 3 - Disable SSID broadcasting.

Step 4 - Chage the SSID default name.

Step 5 - Enable MAC filtering.

Step 6 - Reduce the number of computers allowed to connect.
Step 7 - Use encryption. If you have a "G" router, then use WPA, if you have a "A" or "B", then use WEP 128 bit.

Step 8 - Change your Key regularly. (once a week).

Now if you have a small office wireless network, make sure you know how to connect your computers to your network. Because having MAC filtering and SSID broadcast disabled, your "Windows" box won't find the network using the scanning feature, and if you don't enable the specific MAC address of your computers, you won't be able to connect to your wireless network.

For home users, it should be easier, since you don't have a lot of computers and you can check the MAC addresses quickly.

I would like to mention how important it is to use WPA as your encryption choice.
WEP (even 128bit) is crackable in no more than 5 min, on the other hand, WPA is not as of now crackable.

Very interesting article, knicksfan3!

I think that there are a lot of people who don't secure their network enough. Sometimes people come here to ask how to secure their network better, so I'll save this and I'll be able to tell them this.

Unfortunately, this is not an original piece of work. It is a copy/paste from a 2005 post. See the Google Cached Page.

Since knicksfan3 is disputing whether he plagiarized this post of not, here is a direct quote of the post to criticalsecurity.net by PrOtOn on Nov 14 2005, 11:38 PM

Notice the missing line between Steps 6 and 7? The exact same words and formatting. How about the exact same misspelling of the word "Change" in Step 4? knicksfan3 you plagiarized the post, your further lying will not change that fact.

That's enough. Not one more word. Either this subject is closed now, or you will no longer be welcome at CastleCops. Understand?
