1 IE7 is only update PC requires.
2. There is no third party Firewall or AV installed (Virgin Media PCguard as
supplied by ISP). Happy that hese are now removed from PC. I used a utility called Regcrawler to enusre any remnants in registry have been removed.
3 I've checked and cleanded all user accounts on this machine (6).
4. I'm using Windows firewall only.
5. I've run Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and AVG antispyware. PC icouldn't be cleaner
6. Downloaded and installed IE7
7. Alas, I still cannot open IE7 and view home page etc. Mouse egg-tmer
runs but nothing happening just desktop view
8 I've run "iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff". Nothing. mouse eggtimer, no further activity just desktop view.
9. I've tried to set to Work Offline (Alt-F,W) and then tried to open
Home page ( Alt-Home). It doesn't render a cached page. There is no
activity.
Well........
I've gone to Control Panel and removed IE7. IE6 back up and running. No problem opening web pages.
1. I tried to install IE7 from update site.
2. I've downloaded, saved to desktop and tried to install from there.
I've no adware or spyware programs running. I've no third party Av or
Firewall. I've only Windows Firewall running.
I've confirmed PC clean by running Kaspersky on-line scanner, ran Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot S&D 1.4 and AVG Antispyware 7.5. The PC couldn't be cleaner.
I've followed instructions for IE7 install e.g. restart twice before opening
etc.
So why from a perfectly healthly system, where I can get on the net with IE6 I cannot install IE7 and open it up to view web pages. What is different? what is not being set? what is preventing a succesful IE7 install?

Boot into Safe Mode and see if you can open IE7.

Ko27,
Unfortunately does't open in safe mode either.
I've deleted and reverted to IE6. No problem opening this in both normal mode and safe mode with networking.
I've run RegCrawler and removed all traces of "internet explorer 7" and "ie7". Restarted and ensured could still open IE6 - No issues.
In safe mode with networking, installed IE7. Restarted insafe mode with networking biut still IE7 won't open. IE7 is installed because if I turn on automatic updates it wants to install an update to IE7.
The only problem is opening it. iexplore.exe is not doing soming it should. Pity I'm not being given a reason like missing .dll or something

I would like you to try opening IE7 in "Safe Mode", not "Safe Mode with Networking". Report back exactly (step-by-step) what happens when you try that.

Hi Majestic100,
Another thing you could do is check the event logs to see whether it gives an error there.
Go to start > run. In the box, type eventvwr. Look at application, system and Internet Explorer log files and report any that are red (after you tried opening Internet Explorer). We need to know the Event ID and Source.

Thanks for your responses.....
After much perseverance I have succeeded in resolving the problem.
Issue was after update from IE6 to IE7 I couldn't open web page from desktop internet explorer icon. Click icon and nothing; just desktop view. IE7 was installed due to fact that when auto updates switched, on IE7 updates were available.
I thought therefore something wrong with iexplore.exe, perhaps corrupt. I searched PC, including hidden files and folders, for all occurrence of
iexplore.exe and found in the following folders:-
1. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
Cannot connect to net with this one. This location I
understand as is "normal" location
2. C:\Windows\Software
Distribution\Download\0eda83ef8ec599d822155030a70ecac\SP2GDR
Connects to internet and opens using IE7 format web page
3. C:\Windows\Software
Distribution\Download\0eda83ef8ec599d822155030a70ecac\SP2QFE
Connects to internet and opens using IE7 format web page
4. C:\Windows\$hf_mig$/KB939653-IE7\SP2QFE
Connects to internet and opens using IE7 format web page
5. C:\Windows\IE7
Connects to internet and opens using IE6 format web page. Assume this is where IE6 is re-installed from if you remove IE7
Decided, for hell of it, to copy contents of SP2QFE to C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer. Testing iexplore.exe resulted in same old
problem - couldn't open IE7. Why? it worked in SP2QFE. Concluded therefore something already in the Internet Explorer folder was conflicting with copied files.
Again for the hell of it, decided to delete all files (not folders) in
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer with view to copying across files from
SP2QFE again
In deleting files, could not delete ieproxy.dll as "access denied". All
other files were deleted. Then, without doing anything, 3 files
automatically appeared. These were:-
1. hmmapi.dll
2. iedw.exe
3. iexplore.exe
Clicking on iexplore.exe, connected to internet and home page opened using IE7 format web page. Closed everything down to desktop, clicked Internet Explorer icon and lo and behold IE7 opens up. QED!
This info may be useful for others if run into same or similar problem
