I have an interesting problem. I am using XP Pro with all updates. But when I go to windows update site I recieve the following message.

"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems only.
To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/. "

What in the world happened here? How can XP be seen as a mac? How do I fix this. I have never seen this before or heard of this happening to anyone else.

This is an absolute first for me, and I can't see how it is even possible for the Windows Update site to confuse your system as a MAC! I too have never heard anyone with this issue before. When did you first notice this happening? What were you doing when/before it happened?

Could you post some details about your hardware for us? What were the last set of updates you were able to do? Is IE7 installed? Are you permitting Windows Update to run the necessary ActiveX control? What security hardware and/or software do you use? Any other new software?

I'm just asking questions, hoping to stumble on something and trying to figure out is why the update site could possibly think this is a MAC.

I just noticed it last night. I was just surfing the web.
I am using IE7 and it's security is set properly.
I use AVG pro, and Outpost 2008.
No new software that could cause this problem.
As far as I know, all current updates for XP and for Office 2007.

Computer Specs.

MSI K8N NEO3
AMD 3000+
Nividia GForce 7300 GS
2 Western Digital 250 Gig
Lite-ON DVDRW
Kingston 1 Gig memory
Kingston 512 MB Memory
Nvidia nforce network card

This is a home built system from 2 1/2 years ago.

OK, let me see if something else from MS has a similar issue. Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it creates:

  • Download MGADiag to your desktop.
  • Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
  • Click "Continue"
  • Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
  • Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
  • Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

I found a resolution and it worked, at least for me.

"Windows Update thinks you have a Mac?" With apologies to people who have experienced the frustration of having this problem, I find this a bit humorous. I'm surprised Mac hasn't work an identity crisis theme into its commercials. A tip of the hat to the author of the linked article for an informative, helpful, and entertaining piece of work.

Just wanted to thank you all for helping me out, as I had the same problem as rno2. I've been searching the forum for weeks, trying to find a solution, while fearing my poor little notebook might be infected with viruses, worms or trojans.

Thank You
