I have just bought an HP Pavillon dv2000 working with Vista Home Premium. I accidentally disconnected the laptop at one point, so everytime at startup I get the "disk needs to be checked for consistency" message. However, the check disk stops always stops at 4 or 5% and I have to force shut down the computer and restart. I've installed all the vista updates available and deleted the recently installed programs but nothing seems to solve the problem. I noticed also that when I try to start Windows in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, it freezes while loading window components. But I did a test with PhoenixBIOS and the hard drive came out ok. Does anyone have a solution for that?

I would return the laptop. It is still under warranty, you shouldn't have to troubleshoot it to this extent as the laptop should be working fine even if you did disconnect it

The trouble is I've already passed the 14 days delay for returning the laptop to Best Buy, I was kind of hoping to avoid having to call HP customer support, but I guess I'll have to do that if there's no other solution. Would HP agree to take back the laptop though?

The laptop is no longer returnable. It can only qualify for service via HPs Warranty.

It sounds like it's a bad HDD. Try to download something like Drive Fitness Test and burn it as a bootable CD and run it in the computer.

Geek Squad can honor the HP warranty if it was purchased at Best Buy. If you'd rather deal directly with HP you can call them: 800 HP-Invent

Why are you in any short of confusion HP provides a one year warranty if I am write.. So, you can just get the things fixed by visiting any of the HP service center's.

It is not wise full to go for self trouble shoot if you are not able to do it with ease. As in the procedure you might get somethg wrong which even does not comes in their warranty period...
