Hi mlcsanks,

I've moved this to a more appropriate forum and asked if our experts on your side of the pond can advise on the problem.

Is the child under the age of 13? If so don't try to use the normal tools to close the account, write to customer support, and tech support. And make sure you tell them the child is under 13.

If the child is over 13 I am not sure there is anyway to force them to close the account.

This may or may not apply.
Many password systems allow only a small number of attempts at a password before it gets locked out.
So if you want to lock out an unauthorized person trying to use your son's account, where you do not know the password, make many invalid password attempts until it locks out.

Having said that, nothing beats the approach of contacting the service provider, establishing your credentials, and gaining the control that you need to have to protect a minor.

If your child's friends created an email account in his/her name without consent and set up a page on a networking site with his/her pictures and personal information, that is identity theft.

Assuming these kids are all teens and you really can't control what they do by force anymore, my suggestions would be:
1. Ask your child to have the friends delete the accounts
2. If you child doesn't want to do that, you have to consider whether it is because your child is pleased with what they did, in which case it is unlikely he/she really doesn't have the password to his/her own email account, or is your child possibly being bullied by these other kids and is afraid of the social consequences of confronting them? You might need to contact a counselor or teacher at their school to help here.
3. If your child seems to be on friendly terms with the other kids, get them all together to discuss it with you. Serve snacks. You are likely to find that if you discuss it with them on an adult-to-adult basis, and if you are ready to answer lots of questions in a dispassionate manner, you will all be able to come to an understanding and the other kids will realize it isn't an appropriate joke and delete everything. This has the potential added benefit of making you look like a cool mom to your child's friends, which will raise you up in your child's estimation, too.
4. If you can't get the kids on board voluntarily, you would need to contact their parents. They will likely be just as distressed as you are. A group meeting with all the parents and kids with a neutral party like a school counselor can keep this from turning into a session full of accusations and defensiveness.
5. If all else fails, a letter from a lawyer gets attention.

Also, regarding the password lockout -- you need to find out what procedure the email provider uses to restore lost passwords. They may be able to have a password reset as often as you lock them out.
