My friend could not access the net and thought he had a virus (he didn't have any anti-virus program installed). Well after I installed AVG it found ' JS/Psyme and two infected files in his temp. int. dir. called 'sale(1).htm'. They did have a ton of toolbars and Google Web Accelerator and various other programs installed and running which I have disabled. I cant access any sites so I cant update AVG or any other programs. I have checked all the LAN setting against mine and most things are the same except there are two entries in the Dial-up and VPN section but 'Never Dial a Connection' is checked. Network Connections shows them as 'disconnected' and the LAN local area connection as been connected but after an hour I checked the status and there was only 467 packets sent and 10 recieved. The only other thing is the name of the workgroup on his.

The system is a Dell Dimension E520
OS = XP Media Center Vr 2002 Service Pack 2

I am really lost with this so I hope you can help me get it online then we can get to the other problems. I can copy the HJT file and send it if you need it now.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Sorry about that. it is connected to a modem/router. In the Event Viewer/System folder there are 12 errors some of which are W32Time source errors. I copied a couple if you need them.

Thanks again.

Need more specific information.

1) router model? (make and model actually, such as Linksys WRT54GS)

2) Connection type? (DSL, Cable, dialup)

3) Those extra connections - do they use them at all?

4) Can you post the event viewer logs?

Hi sorry for the delay. Anyway I have DSL and my modem/router is a 2WIRE the model I am not sure of. I got it from Bell Sympatico (my isp). My friend has cable and so why there are entries in the dail-up I dont know. One is has the name of his cable company and the other is Broadband both are PPPoE. I tried a different NIC card ( he uses the onboard ) and that didnt help. Installed Firefox that didnt work either.

Hi everybody I want to thank you for all your help. I really could not solve the problem, I believe it was a process or service that stopped the system from connecting. After running some PING tests I found I could connect in safe mode but not in standard mode. Anyway I've ended up formatting and reinstalling as my friend was anxious to get his system back. So thanks again to all who helped out. Have a great day.
