Posted: Tue May 06, 2008 3:37 pm Post subject: LUA needs Java 1.5? |
|
|
Amy, glad you're back with us - hope all is well.
I am back again with another question. I recently built a new system and installed Vista 64bit on it, and then work sent over a new set of discs for SEP that, this time, included a LUA (previously I was only sent a single disc or sent the client install file only via FTP link). So, I installed SEP 64 bit (and that almost became a fiasco in and of itself, as it kept trying to install to the 32 bit Program Files directory, even when I manually initiated the 64 bit installer), but when I tried to install LUA it tells me I need JAVA 1.5. Now, I already have JAVA 1.6, however I have both JRE *and* JDK ***64bit*** versions - does LUA need 1.5 *specifically, or is it simply not recognizing that I have JAVA since I have the 64bit versions installed? _________________ <img src="http://www.castlecops.com/zx/johnlgalt/johnlgalt%20sig.png">

At first glance I would think this is a 2 part conflict that you were unfortunate to discover but I will see that Symantec and Java both are alerted to the issue that I would think can easily be remedied.
I will alert Reese at Symantec first to your post here and you should expect him to respond here and head this into the proper channels.
Sorry about the problem but reporting things like this is how they are often discovered and best fixed quickly.
Thanks for letting us all know.
PS HAPPY to be here too again !!!

No worries - I'd rather that this get reported through the proper channels - I didn't consider that this may be a 2 part error at all, it puts it in a whole new light.... _________________ <img src="http://www.castlecops.com/zx/johnlgalt/johnlgalt%20sig.png">

Just to follow up - this issue has been sent to the appropriate division for review.

OK. In the meantime I have also learned that, although I Have the 64bit versions of JAVA installed, I cannot actually use them in my browsers, as Sun, in its wise, mysterious ways has decided not to develop plugins for the 64 it versions of JAVA - go figure.
As both the browsers I use often enough are 32 bit to begin with, I suppose I am going to have to install the 32 bit versions of the JDK / JRE anyway, and that might, in and of itself, resolve my issue....
More on this later this weekend. _________________ <img src="http://www.castlecops.com/zx/johnlgalt/johnlgalt%20sig.png">

Java 1.5 was required at one point but is no longer required with the latest versions (2.1.66 or latter.) Symantec aware of an issue in JRE 1.6 where it does not install msvcr71dll: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6509291
so you may have to resolve that or use a latter version. _________________ - Reese Anschultz

Thanks for the link and info Reese. However, I think the message may have meant I need *at least* JAVA 1.5, again, because I have the 64 bit version installed. I'll install the 32 bit versions and see if it makes a difference. _________________ <img src="http://www.castlecops.com/zx/johnlgalt/johnlgalt%20sig.png">
