I normally have a CastleCops account but I can't remember my password and hotmail won't load. That's not my problem though. It was yesterday that I believe I downloaded a corrputed zip file. After extracting all the files, my computer immediately started acting weird. This virus/trojan/ or whatever it is has changed all my settings. My desktop picture was cahnged by it and all my desktop icons were almost removed along with new ones added that I've never seen before. Its also very slow and I'm getting a large amount of pop-ups. I DESPERATELY need some help! If you have any idea how to help I would GREALTY appreciate it!!!

Hi Beastolizer, and Welcome to CC Smile

Please follow AbuIbrahim's advice. You will need to register on this site to post in the HiJackThis forum (registering is free).

You may find that your problem has gone by the time you finish the MRP procedure. If not, post your logs as instructed and one of our experts will be along to assist. If you have any questions about running the programs recommended in the procedure then please post back here and we can run through it with you.

I have removed your duplicate topic from the General Computer Problems forum.

So I tried followin thos steps and when I got to the downloading the HJT application, I got several different responses. The first time, It told me the file was an invalid Win32 application. Then the second time (after I closed out the page and reopened it), it gave me a message saying something like internet couldn't open the folder or it didn't exist. So I'm not sure how I will be able to download it. Not to mention I have an HJT file on my C drive and it won't allow me to download the program. This may be due to the fact that this virus/troja/ whatever this is is making the C drive have no memory. PLEASE give me any suggestions as to how I could install HJT or anything else. Thank you!

See if you can download it from here . If you have access to another computer then download it to that and transfer to your machine on CD or a USB memory stick.

Before you run it, change the name of the file to hijackthis.bat. If that doesn't work try renaming to hijackthis.com.

Some malware prevents .exe files running correctly so this may be a way round the problem.

We have another problem. I can get to the stage where it says to install and i ask me where I want to install it but when I click install, nothing happens. By the way, I do have a CC acount it just happens that whenver I login and try to post something, it just signs me out. So is there anyway you can think of that I will be able to run HJT?

That link I posted above is to a version of HJT that should run without installing. Is that the file that is trying to install?

Hmm, that's strange because I'm getting a little note that reads "Internet Explorer cannot download HiJackThis.exe from download.bleepingcomputer.com," so I'm not sure if the link is trying to download itself? And do you think I should try to open that link on another computer and put it on a USB drive if it works?

Just curious, how serious do you think this problem is? And do you have any idea of what might possibly be wrong?

1) Yes, as soon as you ran into problems downloading it trying another computer is you best option.

2) The way it sounds it is getting more and more serious by the minute - but serious is also a relative term - serious to me is anything that causes a disruption of my normal daily operation of my computer - whereas serious to someone else may only mean data integrity loss or identity theft....

I agree.

If you can't get a HJT log then we can't see what the problem is. It is almost certain your machine is infected and it will only get worse if left alone.

In an emergency you can run HJT from a USB drive but you may not be able to back anything up before it gets fixed.

So lets say I do put HJT on a USB but can't get it to run, what are my other options?
