I have no idea where to begin telling you what the problem is but I will definitely try. I noticed at the beginning of the week that something was wrong when I kept getting these pop-ups that were getting past my pop-up blocker. It’s a pretty aggressive blocker so usually I don’t have this problem. I scanned with AVG and it found nothing but tracking cookies. So I scanned with Spybot. It only found tracking cookies and a firewall issue, which I put off to having turned off the firewall.

Then my update icon kept alerting me that my puter was in danger because automatic updates were turned off – kind of weird because while I don’t have it download and install automatically, I did have it set to download updates so that I could install them at my convenience. However, I cannot turn them on in such a manner that they stay on.

I’ve also had several instances of AVG alerting me to failed updates, however I read in the forum that this might have been because the servers were busy. If the mass update started back on August 12th then this could very well be true. So don’t know about this one. Normally if I have a failed update it’s because of the time of day but lately I have set it to update at 0300 EST thinking that this might be a less busy time of day. Anyway, don’t know if that’s an issue or not.

I did not realize I had a serious issue until I attempted a system restore and found all the restore points wiped out. At that point the first thing I did was turn off system restore. Not fun but I know the darn thing is just insinuating itself in the restore points so no point in having it on anyway.

Interestingly, I had almost an identical problem, three or four years ago. Not complaining mind you, just know I’m in for a ton of fun

I have scanned with AVG, Spybot Search & Destroy, Trend Micro HouseCall, Rogue Remover, CWShredder, VondoFix (because Spybot S & D found something called Virtumonde.dll), and of course, HijackThis. I am not able to scan with Ad Aware because it says there is a graphics file missing and I am unable to download another copy because no matter which download site I use the page comes up with errors on the page and no link to follow for downloading the program. Additionally, I used Piriform CCleaner to get rid of any cookies and temporary files that might be helping the darn thing to respawn.

Because I had lots of time to look around while waiting for HouseCall to do its thing, I found nonsense .dll files in the browser add ons that when I disabled them, they didn’t stay disabled. I also found nonsense .dll files in the System32 folder. In the Downloaded Program Files folder, I was looking at the Active X files’ properties and noticed that every one of them had damaged file dependencies.

So, there you have it, as much as I can tell you about what’s been happening. I’ve been working on this for three days by myself so I may have forgotten some things, but I should remember them along the way if something jogs my memory.

I also ran an AVG scan in safe mode as Administrator (I saved the log file if you wish to see it) it presented no infections because the infected files are reported as “Locked file. Not tested.”

Oh. I would be more than happy to update Windows, unfortunately, my auto update is disabled and I cannot enable it nor can I start it in “Services”. Going to the Windows update site I get the error message that I cannot be updated because I don’t have updates enabled. Nice circular conundrum there.

I believe that’s everything to date. Oh, one more thing, although I have had P2P programs on here before, if there is anything here now, it is not from lack of trying to remove it. I’ve been trying to take them off for quite some time and anywhere I see anything to do with them while I’m exploring my machine I delete it.

As an aside, the only place I’ve been within the last 2 weeks that I may have picked up something like this is the multitude of “free” MySpace layout and comments sites and You Tube, which is why I never wanted to go to them in the first place.

As I'm writing this, I remembered that I should probably tell you that I've run and changed things with HJT. Having used it before, I felt somewhat comfortable in fixing some things. What I don't understand, I don't touch...that is pretty much anything to do with editing the registry. I did use Startup List 2.02 by Merjin just to see what was going on in the start up. It does have a nice "Regedit jump" but I didn't touch anything - just looked.

Did I mention that Vundo Fix found no infected files? I should probably keep a log as to what I do when I'm working on this "stuff" but I never think of it until I get to needing to ask for help, which is generally my last resort.

Re: HJT Log: Although it reports that I have Internet Explorer as a running process, I did not have a browser open when I ran HJT. Additionally, this was run after changing the name HijackThis to THJ…just a little bit different than when I ran it without changing the name.

Now, I have a couple questions as well. Since my updates are working now, I have the SP3 waiting to be installed; however, I keep hearing conflicting opinions on whether or not to install it yet. Obviously, not quite yet on here til I get it all cleaned up; but...should I wait til they work out the bugs? I expect anything new to have bugs because you cannot anticipate every person's unique usage of their machines. Have they worked some of them out, or should I wait a little bit?

Other question, I play Pop Cap games through Shockwave, is the adware getting loaded on my machine at the same time as the games or am I getting them from somewhere else?

Last question for now: Can I safely delete everything out of the downloaded programs, which are the ActiveX apps, since they're pretty much all damaged anyway? If I want anything in there, I'll most likely get them again when I go the the various websites.

I'm very happy to report that I was able to fix and update my Ad-Aware program...very happy there. Was feeling kind of "naked" without it.

The one thing that is still troubling me is the iexplore.exe that shows up in the processes through the task manager while there is no browser open. While it does not show up on the HJT log as a running process, the task manager lists it and the memory usage is listed at about 4MB. I have no idea where this is coming from...especially since it doesn't show up in any logs anymore.
