jv...or even Randy_Bell.
Just clicked on the LiveUpdate for NAV2002...and there is a Norton Internet Security security update - auto-config...1192.7KB .
Should I allowed it to be downloaded or what?
I'm 'leery' about doing these since that Redirector fiasco.
Will follow your suggestions.

Lonnie,
According to what's said in the LiveUpdate details window, that's just an update for the Rules Templates.
For example if you've got Enable Automatic Internet Access Control checked (in the "Configure" button for Internet Access Control), these are the templates that NIS/NPF uses to then generate rules for an application. (Incidentally, i do not recommend enabling this option.)
Alternatively, if you don't have that option checked and you've got Security Level set to high, then when the Rules Assistant pops up (first time a new application tries to access the Internet), this is where NIS/NPF would retrieve information on any pre-defined rules that might be known for NIS/NPF for that application. (This is the "Allow NIS/NPF to automatically configure this application for you.")
These rules templates get updated (and apparently the whole set does) everytime Symantec adds a new application that it recognizes -- for example to add a new Internet-enabled game that has become quite popular. Also, if Symantec decides to changes the previously distributed templates of what's allowed and permitted, same thing happens. For example, in this instance, if they wanted to modify the "Default Block UPNP" rules templates to automatically include TCP port 5000, you'd then see a new LiveUpdate of this sort.
This is one of the features (and part of the bloat, if you will) of NIS/NPF as compared to its predecessor, AtGuard. It's been present ever since NIS/NPF 1.0, although it's actually implemented a good deal differently in the more recent releases like NIS/NPF 2003/2004.

I just needed clarification on what SHOULD be downloaded in NPF. (Guess I should have put this thread in the General Symantec sub-Forum). |
Well, that obviously differs depending on what you want!
For example, the attachment shows what I see running NIS 2002 but after declining to install NAV. And I don't have Norton Utilities or Norton System Works, or Norton Ghost. It's actually pretty close to what a NPF 2002 user would see, but not quite the same. For example a NPF user wouldn't see those URL updates because they're related to the Parental Control functions that allow you to decide what sites you want to block. I don't download these for the simple reason that we're all adults around here (at least I would hope so!) -- not to mention that it's a huge download, almost 10 MB.
I haven't seen a LiveUpdate update in ages and I've now forgotten what they even look like.
I do download the auto-config LiveUpdates (NIS Security Updates) because that's the only way I'm going to get rulesets for new applications that I've installed on this machine that may not have even existed back in 2001 (when NIS 2002 was actually released). (Hey, if I wanted to figure all this stuff out for myself, I could have stayed with AtGuard!)
I don't (or haven't so far) downloaded the LiveReg updates because, quite honestly, I'm not sure which NIS 2002 CD was used on the Win XP box here and I don't really care to have my registration and Live Update ability eliminated because I've now used the same CD! (Indeed, I think this has already turned into a problem for people who do have multiple CDs, one for each machine and have paid a fortune as a consequence, since Symantec doesn't provide a real volume licensing discount.)
Back to the subject, as far as I can tell, the problems that have been encountered were either a consequence of the LiveUpdate updates (which would then screw up LiveUpdate) or the NIS Program Updates (which would screw up NIS).
And, rather obviously, if I had installed NAV, I would most assuredly download the new virus signatures.

Lonnie,
I'm not sure what your question is. I think what you're referring to as a yellow circle with a black "!" on it is simply an indicator that there is an update available that you either did not download or did not successfully install.
If you're asking what do you do to stop seeing that indicator (by eliminating permanently requests for that kind of update, for example), I don't know of any way to do it.
