Hi Folks,
Just purchased new Dell laptop with router. Installed beautifully to PC WinXPHome(No SP2 udate) as well as to new laptop. Problem is it won't allow MS Outlook 2000SP2 to connect to shaw cable email address. Yes the router has had firmware updated and LinkSys 2hr conversation tried everything under the sun to help get this under control. Any ideas? Please advise to sauble@excite.com Any assistance would be great thanks...sauble

Well, Sauble, we don't do email support but like to keep it in the forums so that more people can benefit. Are you seeing anything in the logs about anything being blocked? _________________

I'm not sure what you mean by 'logs', but when I ipconfig/all through command prompt...nothing unusual comes up. Everything in its place. The only odd thing I think is that there is a line that says IP Routing enabled: no. Should THAT be different?

I meant the logs in the WRT54G. Your IP routing setting is just fine. _________________

Well, I'm not sure how I go about retreiving those logs, but the LinkSys tech and I were on the phone for a few hours trying to find the glitch. I've since disconnected the router from my PC so we can use our Outlook, but I could always plug things back in Sunday to do some more tweeking. I really think it has something to do with my PC though; once I disconnected the router Outlook worked just fine! Could it be a setup in McAfee? Regardless, having been through the online setups several times today, maybe that is the Logs you are referring to. If not please do...tell me how to retrieve them. Thanks.

In the WRT54G you can access the incoming and outgoing logs by entering the router online configuration utility and then selecting Administration|Log. If the logs are not enabled then you should enable them, try your Outlook, and then check them for results.
Something else to try as a troubleshooting aid is to disable the router's firewall. Note that I am recommending this as a diagnostic measure only and not as a permanent solution. Under the Security tab in the router utility you can enable or disable the firewall.
Also take a look under the Access Restrictions tab and ensure that neither SMTP nor POP3 is included under Blocked Services. _________________

Seems unlikely but almost sounds that his email service provider is running their email server off of a different port (rather than SMPT) and that the router is blocking that traffic.
Cheers,

Not a bad thought at all, Dave. It is also possible that it is IMAP.
Okay Sauble, we can determine this fairly easily. Open Outlook and go to tools|email accounts and select "View existing accounts". Then press "Next".
Select an email account (click to highlight) and look at the type. It will probably list "POP/SMTP". If that is the case then press "Change".
On the next screen press "More Settings" and then select the "Advanced" tab. This will show you the Server port numbers. These are normally 110 for POP3 and 25 for SMTP. If these are set at anything else we need to know that.
Now select the "Connection" tab. This should probably be set at "Connect using my local area network".
You can then cancel out of all the screens and post your results back here. _________________
