Can somebody give me some advise? I just found the Antivir Guard installed in my computer is not scanning any files! No matter what I open or download, the file count in the Guard screen remains at zero, and there is nothing in the “last scanned file” section.
The Guard is loading with windows, and I am certain is up to date. The VxD status says “active”, and the on demand scanner is working normally.
I am pretty sure that I don’t have any viruses, worms, spyware or other pests in my machine. At least that is what Spybot, Adaware, A2 (A Square), Antidote and the on-line scanner at Trendmicro say (BTW, this last one, “Housecall”, I downloaded the bloddy active-x thing and now I don’t know how to get rid of it!)
I can’t tell for how long I have had this fault. I was confident that Antivir was working propperly, so I hadn’t checked in a long while.
I’m running Windows ME on a HP Vectra P III. All Windows updates are installed.

I already tried both updating the program, and uninstalling and re-installing a freshly downloaded copy. To no avail!

Just as an added comment, I also have Antivir PE running in my other computer, using Win98 SE and is working fine there. But I wouldn't expect that to be the reason...

I wouln’t want to quit on Antivir, it is most cerntainly the best free antivirus around, for it’s performance and small use of resources (I’m not too happy with Avast, and I understand that AVG is no longer very reliable).

Any ideas? Have I stumbled upon a bug on the program? I’ll apreciate any help.

These are the files installed:

Main program: V6.28.00.07, 10/10/04
Search engine: V6.28.0.12, 10/27/04
VDF: 6.28.0.42, 10/27/04
DLL: 6.28.0.21, 10/18/04

AV guard:
Main program: 6.28.00.00

PS: I also posted this question at the Antivir forum, but it didn't get trough. I'm affraid my german is limited to spelling "volkswagen" Embarassed

Howdy,

Doulbe click the AVPE icon, got to options - configuration - scanner and make sure that the boxes "all files" and "local drives" are checked.

Hello!
Thanks for your reply. Smile
I did as you suggested; the "local drives" tick box was checked, I only changed the options to scan all files. No result.
Just to see what happened, I unchecked the "local drives" box (clicked "yes" at the warning pop-up) and restarted my computer. Then I re-checked the box. Still nothing!
My fear is that unless AV Guard has some problem, I may be infected with some unusual virus or the like that is interfering with the Guard; and for some reason is not being detected by any security program. Unlikely, but these days anything can happen.
I don't see anything wrong using Hijack This (to my knowledge). But maybe I should try with some other analyzing tool?

I'm planning to uninstall Antivir and try with Avast or AVG, at least temporarily, just to see if their resident scanners work. I'm willing to post my experience if it helps other people.

Again, thanks for your help.

Regards.

Mark.

Howdy,

Please post an HJT log in the HJT forum here. We can then look to see if something has shut down the guard.

After posting your log, please post here again so I can look at the log.

Hi Mad-Mark,

In case you need them here are the instuctions:

HijackThis is a tool we use to detect spywares, adwares, and many other kinds of malicious programs on your computer. It takes an expert or a person with pc security experience (who is on Staff here) to interpret what it finds as it lists the good stuff along with the bad.

Please follow these directions:

From Computer Cops get the Direct-Download of HijackThis. It's zipped.

Save it to your download folder first.
Unzip the download (using a piece of software like Winzip). Create a folder in My Documents and unzip HijackThis into the new folder and run it from there.
Do not run HijackThis from your desktop or a Temp folder as these do not allow HijackThis to save the changes it makes.

Doubleclick on HijackThis.exe from the unzipped archive and press the "Scan" button.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press this button, and save the log to the same folder as HijackThis.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Go to the Hijackthis - Spyware, Viruses, Worms, Trojans Oh My! Forum and click on "New Topic."
Copy and paste the contents of your entire HijackThis log into your New Topic post. Please do not post more than one New Topic for your problem. The others will be deleted. If you have been advised to post your HijackThis Log there by a Host/Mod from another forum please post the address for your New Topic here. Thanks.

Open the Log with Wordpad/Notepad (for example), Press Ctrl + A to highlight all, then Press Ctrl + C to copy it. To put it in your post, position the cursor on the page and press Ctrl + V.

Best regards

Hello MrRockford and Prince Serendip.

I hope I got it right: I posted my HJT log in Hijackthis forum, and here is the link:

CastleCops Link/t84354-Antivir_Guard_not_scanning.html

Did I do it right?

Again, many thanks for your help.

Mark.

Hello again.

I reposted the log after clearing the tick box that says "ignore non standard but safe domains in IE" in the configuration.
That is all I get when I click on "Scan" and then on "Save log". Then I select all in notepad an copy/paste it to post it.

Here is the link: CastleCops Link/t84354-Antivir_Guard_not_scanning.html

What is missing? Should I have something else running, that I may have deactivated from startup? (I have cleared some unnecesary entries, like the task scheduller and the micrsoft office entries, using MSconfig) Should I also post the Startup Log that HJT generates?

Thanks and regards.

Mark.
