Crying or Very sad Ahhhh.... For the past 6 hours I have been trying to connect to internet wirelessly using my laptop, which is connected to my network. For some reason, the laptop sees the network, connects, but doesn't allow me to surf the internet. I have searched througout these forums for any people who have had a similar expirence as mine, but only managed to get myself lost with MAC adresses, PPPoe's, and other network stuff similar to that. I have the WRT54G linksys router, and have tried to sort things out from the embedded browser web page (from the router), with no luck. My laptop can also browse the embedded web page, but cannot connect to the internet. My other computer can connect to the internet (it is wired to the router).

I have Windows XP SP2.

Mad ACccckkk... I am on the verge of chucking this router out the window... any suggestions?

Check your TCP/IP settings - is it set to obtain the IP address automatically?

Also make sure, on the laptop, that the default gateway & subnet mask match that of the router. The IP address of the laptop (local machine) has to be different from the others on the network.

Click start, run, type cmd and click ok. Then type in IPCONFIG and see what comes up. Do the same on the PC and make sure the default gateway and subnet mask are the same.

What kind of laptop is it and what kind of wireless card do you have in it?
Can you check the properties of the wireless card?

Make sure WEP and/or WPA encryption are turned off while you are trying to set it up.

I had one heck of a time getting my laptop to connect to the internet at first, even though it was connected to the network and router just fine. I went through every kind of check in the book. It took a Toshiba tech to figure out the problem, which was an unusual one most likely, but I'll mention it here just in case.

When I bought the Toshiba laptop, it had a trial of Norton Anti-Virus pre-installed. I uninstalled it in the add/remove program folder but not everything was removed. (Norton has an online un-installer which I should have used.) There was something left over from Norton in the services affecting the DHCP which prevented it from connecting to the internet. Once the offending file was deleted, it connected like a dream.

Post back what you have tried so far and I'll help if I can.

Thank you for responding, suzicat. It seems that my computer was set to receive certain DNS servers manually, and not automatically. After setting this to automatic, it works like a charm. Thank you for this information, suzicat. I will now bestow a plethora of THANK YOU'S to show exactly how grateful I am.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

If there is anything I could ever help you with, let me know (unless it is about money Very Happy ). THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, suzicat

Very Happy You are very welcome! I'm glad it was so easy. I know how frustrating it can be because I spent hours trying to get mine to work at first.
