Please excuse if I have posted to wrong place. If someone could help. I am running windows 98 and until now have used AOL as ISP but am switching to YAHOO-SBC DSL. I installed a Linksys Ethernet 10/100 lan Card. My system recognizes it and I am able to load the drivers it appears. When I try to set up my network config to enable file & print sharing it will not add. When I click "enable file & print sharing" and hit "add" and select "client" and hit "add" it does not provide list to select from and it will not add the file & print sharing. I have tried it all diff ways. I went ahead and ran the DSL cd and it goes through about 6 steps and comes back with error message telling me my system shows that I have a ethernet card installed but I need to bind -TCP/IP and gives instructions back to my network config to do what it won't let me do! I am thinking it is probably something over my head at this time and am just about ready to shell out the $200 to get the tech to come out. I would appreciate any ideas.

Hi Elew, this thread will be moved to another forum but in the mean time, I will get started on an answer.

You said that you loaded the driver for the NIC (Network Interface Card). Do you now have an icon for "Network Neighborhood" on the desktop?

If you do, RIGHT click on the icon and select properties . This should bring up the window for " Network". First tab to show is the "Configuration" tab. There should be at three things listed here, sometimes more but the important ones are "Client for Microsoft Network", then a listing for your NIC and "TCP/IP". Let me know if you do not have these.

Since you have been using AOL there may be several entries here for that. These should be " removed" since they may interfere with your new setup.

If you can't find these via the "Network Neighborhood" you can start the control panel and click the "Network" icon there. It goes to the same place.

Let me know what you find and we can go from there.

Question:
Why are you trying to turn on file and printer sharing. They are not required for Internet access and can be risky to use on the Internet because of security holes. Do not turn them on unless you really need to.

BTW, As you setup the SBC Internet connection, know that you should not need the Yahoo software that is supplied with the kit. There are a lot of background files that are automatically loaded when you install this package. Once the Modem is configured, you should be able to use your browser on the Internet just fine without it. I have SBC Internet access and do not run the Yahoo software.

ZippyZingo thanks for your reply. Yes I do have the network Neighborhood icon and yes it does have the TCP/IP dial up adapter, TCP\IP dial-up adapter #2(VPN support),it also has
Client for Microsoft Networks,
Dial-up adapter,
Dial-up adapter #2(VPN support),
Linksys lne100tx(v5)ethernet adapter,
WAN miniport (ATW),
NDISWAN->Wan miniport

The directions with the ethernet card tell me to enable file&print sharing as the 4th step to set up the network configuration. But I understand now I don't need to do that I was just (blindly) following the directions in the pamplet. Sad

There should be a TCP/IP entry which shows something like;

TCP/IP->Linksys lne100tx(v5)ethernet adapter .

This line indicates that you have a "binding" of TCP/IP to your NIC (Network Interface Card). If you do not have an entry like this we may have to add one. Select the entry for the Linksys Ethernet adapter (put your cursor over the entry and "left" click). Select the Proporties button under the listings then select the "binding" tab on the window that pops up. In that window should be an entry like the one in bold above for TCP/IP. Make sure that the box is checked then say OK for everything.

The dialup adapters may be getting in you way but for now see what you can find in the above instructions and let me know.

after clicking linksys ethernet card i go to properties and check binding and there is nothing at all in the box. That is also when I go back to try to add the protocol and I get to "select network component" I select "protocol" click "add" but there is no manufacturers list or dialog box to choose a protocol.
I have called the Sbc-Yahoo Dsl people they tell me it is in my ethernet card so I called Linksys they said it is my AOL IsP I call them they sent me to where I bought my computer so I call Gateway and I can't seem to make them understand what it is I am trying to do. I have talked to them twice.

Elew, I have a bit of a dilema. I really think that you will need to remove the AOL listings in order to get the SBC DSL connection to work but Removing the AOL drivers will kill you Internet connection until you get the SBC connection working, which will cut you off from help, if you know what I mean. I have conferred with one of the other staff members. He has given me a couple of ideas but I must research them before I pass them on to you. I will try to do this ASAP but have a busy few days ahead. Please be patient.
